Change Your iPhone/iPod Touch Root Password

If you aren’t jailbroken, ignore this.

IMG_0050There was a recent hack targeted towards jailbroken iPhone’s running on 3G networks with the SSH daemon enabled. This changed your wallpaper to what you see below.

ikee-iphone-wallpaperThere are a few easy ways to prevent something like this from happening. You can simply disable the SSH daemon with something like SBSettings. OR, you can change your iPhone’s root password (which all jailbroken users should do regardless).

If you want to change your root password, here’s how to do it. You can use SSH itself, or MobileTerminal on your device. If you’re using MobileTerminal, make sure you login as root first (login root, then alpine).

  1. passwd
  2. [enter new password]
  3. [enter new password again]

There. It’s that simple. This quick command can keep you safe from over the air hackers. If you’re on a iPod Touch, it’s also recommended to do this. Someone could be looking for iPod Touch’s with the SSH daemon enabled.

You can leave a response, or trackback from your own site.
